Xiaomi Piston 2 Review: Great Quality In-Ear Earphones For All

It's just a couple of months ago since Xiaomi has arrived on our land and introduced bang-for-the-buck smartphones started by Mi 3 and followed by the Redmi 1s. But not only those, the company also brought high quality accessories including the in-ear earphones, Piston 2. In this post, we will review the golden Piston rescuing the audiophiles out there without wrecking their pockets.

Wait, you're in the right post. That's the earphone Piston version 2, or 2.1 to be exact. I just removed the ear buds to make it look like a real piston found in our car's engine. Great resemblance isn't it?

Xiaomi Piston 2 Specs:
  • 3.5mm jack
  • 20-20000 Hz
  • 93dB sensitivity
  • 16ohms
  • 12 grams
  • 5mW
  • 1.2m cord length
It's interesting how would Xiaomi's earphones would be like, seeing how the Mi 3's great build quality is. This package was ordered from Lazada and it came just on time. The cardboard box acts as the instruction manual itself. There's a surprise waiting upon opening the case -- smell of a chocolate, sweet and delicious scent. The box contains the earphone wrapped creatively in a rubber casing. Under it are three ear buds in different sizes and a shirt clip (version 2.1).

For sure, the piston 2 will give you a good impression upon unwrapping it. The aluminum construction of the jack, y-split and earphones boast premium. I also noticed immediately that the cables are not of the same material. The cable starting from the jack up to the y-split are made up of Kevlar cord, giving a soft braided texture that makes it easy to manage. From the y-split to the ear housings, the cables are made up of rubber. The combination of the braided cord and the traditional rubber add plus to the design, but I wonder if it would make them more resistant to tangles.

The rubber case is very light and handy. You can carry it around and easily wrap your headset. See the video below on how to return your piston back to this holder.

The mic, volume up and volume down, and play/answer calls button are a great addition in this in-ear headset. You can even assign button functions if you're using a Mi smartphone.

Sound

I'm not a sound expert nor expend too much on these stuffs but I did experience many high quality earphones with my peers' help. Being an earphone under the price of P1000, I compared this to my Coloud Pop in-ear earphones.

I played a couple of songs in my playlist: pop, trance, disco, rock, acoustic, etc. For the bass, it's not that bassy but the bass punch is there, clear and tight. You can hear the bass sound indeed when listening to any type of music and won't feel hungry of it. For the mids and trebles, I heard a wide range of instruments playing. The snare drums sound great, the singer doesn't sound enclosed in a room, and everything's in good detail. Compared to the Coloud Pop priced at around P900, both are on par in terms of audio quality but without adjustments, the Piston 2 got the advantage in mids while the Coloud Pop in bass region.

Conclusion

Overall, the sound quality is indeed more than what the price tag suggests. If you like listening to a wide range of music genres, this earphone suits you. But if you want a lot of deep bass on your ears, then you might test it first with the others. The Xiaomi's sound settings in their phones would be a great help. Plus, if you know how to tinker the Equalizer, then it would mean a lot. This is really worth trying specially if you're looking for an in-ear earphone with mic not just for your audio needs but also for your calling and video-chatting requirements. The Piston 2 is available for only P695 via Lazada during Mi Philippines flash sales.
