Internal Phone Storage: Is 16GB enough? Hint and Tips Here

You want a new gadget and you saw that its internal phone storage is 16GB. Now, you're weary if it is enough for your files and stuffs. Furthermore, it does not have a memory card expansion slot! Can you survive with it?

Is it really enough, 16GB, iphone, nexus

Internal phone storage might be a deal breaker for some, but others disregard it. It's easy to decide if your phone of choice have microSD card slot in it-- just plug it in and you're good to go. Even few re-branded phones (Cherry Mobile, Starmobile, My Phone, etc) with only 4GB ROM are not a problem 'cause there are apps that move your files to SD card or you can swap the SD card and internal ROM with the help of rooting. However, there are phones that do not have slot for expansion, but they have unique features that many (as in many) user wants. Some of them are the ever-popular iOS Devices--iPhones and iPads, and the Android flagships--Nexus devices and HTC One. There are also mid-range-priced prominent phones, Motorola Moto G and Xiaomi Mi 3.

Some just buy phones with larger memory because they are scared that the capacity will not suffice, in exchange of putting a hole in their pocket. Others just purchase and then adapt their usage based on what they got. For me, I'm with the latter.

16GB isn't really 16GB

Misleading? Not. I just want to emphasize that choosing a device that says 16GB storage does not really mean you can utilize all that 16GB. Many know that already, but others just forget. For example: an iPhone 5s 16GB has only ~12.2GB available to the user, while a Nexus 5 has ~12.28GB usable. It is because of the Operating System sharing a space on the memory, and our phones cannot run without them.

Usage

iPad, iPhone, 16GB internal storage

There are people who can be labeled as "power-users" because they tend to store a lot on their devices. Here are the common files they hog:
  • HD Games
  • HD or FHD Videos and Movies
  • Thousands of songs
  • Lots of Documents (can replace a mini library)
Yes, there's a wall between need and greed, but at the end of the day, we just do what we want.

Tips

We already have our phone we love to be with and together with its limited storage, we can still enjoy it without regret. We just have to do some solutions, review our content and alas, problem solved!

For Audiophiles out there, Smart Communications and Globe Telecom are now rolling out music streaming services. Spinnr for the former and Spotify for the latter. Don't be left out. Music streaming will soon be on mainstream and many are now enjoying it.

For Hard-core gamers, are you sure you play those HD games with large sizes everyday? Why not just install the ones which you play most? And by looking at the Top Games alone, we can agree that many quality games come in small sizes.

For Movies and Document, abundant smartphones if not all, features USB On-The-Go. Don't you have flash drives? You can save all your movies and documents there. The OTG cable, btw, is priced at P30~P70 in my last canvass.

The Cloud Storage

iCloud
No, it's not the one made of water vapor. Cloud Storage might be the best solution for our limited internal phone storage, if we have internet access of course. Many iPhone users are aware of this long time ago for the reason that iOS devices do not have memory card slots since then. But for many android users, the memory card comes in handy and the ones with limited internal storage utilize the cloud service more.

Indeed, the cloud storage is a great help for retrieving and storing calendars, spreadsheets, contacts, messages, videos, pics, songs, etc. We won't have to worry of having left important files at home. But one thing it can't do is to hold application and game data so we still have to manage those well.

Final Thoughts

The limited 16GB is just enough for an average user and we can have plenty of space left if we learn how to utilize our resources well. For a couple of more years, I believe that 16GB is sufficient, but the time will come that we may need more space. The games and camera sensors are evolving, file sizes may multiply. How about you, is it enough?
